Repurposed coffee table 1970 meet 2009

UPDATE - I did NOT anticipate so many comments and compliments on this piece. It really was an easy project and I giggle when I read the comments about how you would have never thought to turn a coffee table into a bench, seriously I'm not that crafty, I'm just cheap. I see those flimsy metal ones in catalogs and cringe at the $80+ price. I so THRILLED you gals are inspired to try one yourself. You MUST email pics so I can see them. byrdiebbyrd@yahoo.com.

I love a good coffee table but I LURVE re-purposing them even more. I love how the hard work is already done - is some foreign country - and quite well I might add. This is the 2nd table that I have not been able to get the top off of, I've taken the screws out but the tops appeared glued down as well, making an upholstery project more difficult than it has to be!

Meet Mr. 1970

He is going under general anesthesia for some minor work

*Minor* with the ole faithful cottonwood white. Now when I painted this I started to look at it and think how pretty if I just left it two tone but then thought it doesn't go with the living room furniture, I'd have to repaint it stark white not almond if I wanted to sit it in there and after 2 days of painting I said NO WAY. I left the top untouched in case I want to do that one day.

Here he is in "re-covery" and here is where I got crafty. I had an old bedspread that was full of batting so I chopped her up to length then folded her into 3's long ways to fit width. Then I took an Old 84x45 curtain panel to use as the top fabric (for now) I plan on going fabric shopping next week and will recover this then...but for now indulge me please. I staples it all around then trimmed off the excess since I couldn't get the top off to properly hide the edges.

Here he is in his new place - all "recovered"

Mr. 2009

UPDATED - Storage added and has survived the weekend with the toddler AND the husband standing on it to pull the ceiling fan chain *sigh*

I'm sure this will soon be a place full of toys, shoes, hidden toddler wonders...everything it wasn't meant to be...it will be.

Greatest thing about this project...it was FREE! The table was courtesy of a freecycler and I had all the other things already. If I had to put a price on it...$21 TOPS. I paid $9.99 several months ago for the spread I chopped up, $7 for paint that has been used for 5 projects now and $3.99 for the panel of a set of curtains retired and replaced.

What an awesome transformation! I had to laugh when you talked about all that it wasn't meant to be that it soon will be. That's all too true. I redid a bench about 6 months ago and went downstairs this morning to see my daughter had carved her name all over it. Ah, well. Just adds personality right:) I am so touched by your family situation. I'm so happy that your daughter is out of the NICU.

Wow -- that looks fantastic. I wondered where you were going with it, and at first couldn't understand why you hadn't painted the top ... well then it all came clear!

Great idea.

What color paint is that? I really like it -- not too white, but not too "off" either. I'm collecting ideas for paint shades, preparing to paint our kitchen cabinets in the spring.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love this! How crafty you are and to think of all the discarded ones out there!

A few years ago I did something similar with a "wood box" but I put it on casters, painted it, made it into a bench seat. It was very cool since our kids could keep their toys in it....

Thanks for sharing all the pics!

Have a great day :)
