Psychological Causes Of Eating Disorders

Question about laxative abuse – how long does it take to do damage?

I know I’ve on my way to an eating disorder because I have abused laxatives. I have gone though one 24 count box of extra strength exlax over the course of about three months (taking 1 or 2 at a time).

I KNOW this is bad. I PLAN on getting a therapist. So I don’t need the lectures right now. What I need is to know how close I came to actually doing any damage. I assume it takes more months, years, or taking much more than one box of pills to do anything permanantly harmful.

I know I’ve done psychological harm, but have I done anything that will cause long-term problems yet?

Yes, it’s unlikely that you’ve done any permanant damage using just one box. I think most people who run into problems have been abusing them for a greater length of time. Just get help soon!

What do you do to keep yourself from over eating?
